THEME: Gigabit Cities Live showcases innovation in high-bandwidth applications and services that are critical to driving value from the gigabit network architecture and generating economic growth for 21st-century Gigabit Cities. This new array of consumer and business applications is redefining the broadband experience and energizing economic development in communities. The broad theme of the hackathon is to build innovative new digital tools or oragnizations for the gigabit cities ecosystem. Challenges will center on startups, generating better civic outcomes, nonprofit support, economic development tools, and smart cities applications using gigabit infrastructure. It will be structured similarly to a startup weekend. The three main challenges are: • Gigabit Startup: If your city had gig access, what kind of business startup idea or app could you build? Design a business startup that would take advantage of a gigabit network. What would your startup look like? Who would be on your team? • Gigabit Nonprofit: Design a social program or app that could be built if you had gig access. What cause would you support or problem would you solve? • Gigabit Civic: If you could design a civic program or app that would be run by a city government or municipal agency, for example, what would that look like? Bonus points for selecting a specific city.
RULES: Participants will be provided with wifi access. The organizers will provide audio and visual equipment for the presentations on Thursday May 14th. Please bring laptops and/or any other equipment you may need to take part in the hackathon, such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets, extension cords, paper and pens, whiteboard markers, etc. All food and drink will be provided. You don’t need to know about everything about gigabit infrastructure. At the hackathon, leading industry experts will explain more. You’ll gain all the insights you need to develop meaningful prototype digital solutions which can make a difference in gigabit communities.
JUDGING: Teams should prepare to give a 3-minute pitch presentation by the end of the hackathon. The judging panel will evaluate each team’s presentation at the close of the hackathon according to the following criteria: • Ability to meet real needs • Creativity, innovation and originality • Feasibility/practicality of implementation • Quality of the presentation and demonstration Bonus points will be given for teams that go the extra mile to provide interesting or interactive visuals such as mockups or real word pictures, for example.
PRIZE: Teams will have a chance to win one of three prizes, to be divided among participating team members: • First prize: $6,000 • Second prize: $3,000 • Third prize: $1,000
WHY A GIGABIT CITIES HACKATHON: More than four years ago, cities like Chattanooga initiated the first of the Gigabit Cities efforts in the US with a mission was transform its communities, drive economic growth, attract new businesses, create new jobs and spurring digital innovation. That city's goals -- and its successes -- helped define the Gigabit Cities era. Although many of these efforts have met with great success and media awareness, there remain many challenges and pitfalls for every company and municipality investing in the Gigabit Cities ecosystem. First and foremost among those challenges is recognizing that Gigabit Cities is just that: an ecosystem, comprised of not just networks and technology, not just business plans and strategic approaches, not just economic development and urban renewal goals, and not just services and applications strategies -- but all of the above. The players in the Gigabit Cities realm are now attempting to create and define what's next for high-speed networks and services. Gigabit Cities Live is an extension of and enhancement to the Gigabit Cities ecosystem -- a forum for exploring and debating the challenges and business approaches, a lens through which to compare and contrast the successes and failures, a living laboratory for examining the underlying technologies and envisioning service and application innovation, and an assembly point for forging the partnerships and affiliations that will make the ecosystem thrive. The advent of Gigabit Cities is transforming all facets of American life -- healthcare, clean energy, public safety, education, transportation, advanced manufacturing, collaboration, entertainment and beyond. It is truly reshaping and redefining how we work, live and play. Gigabit Cities Live will showcase the technology, vision and innovation driving that environment.
